“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money" - Matthew 6:24.

If leaders do what they do only for money, then they are a 'hired gun,' renting their services to the highest bidder. Money is a tricky and devious motivator, for to get money leaders have been known to do things they never thought they would do. What's more, the pursuit of money seems to take the place of God in the lives of the pursuers as Paul warned us, "But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs" (1 Timothy 6:9-10 ESV). Jesus warned us in today's verse that if anyone loves money, that person will hate God, which again indicates how strong the pull of money can be in someone's life.

LEADERSHIP STEP: There is only one antidote for the love of money and that is generosity. Today your step is to be generous! Perhaps there is someone in your world whom you can reward for a job well done by giving them an unexpected bonus, whether small or large. Or maybe you can give a personal gift out of your own funds to the poor. Finally, maybe someone in your world deserves a raise and today you will give it to them.
