Grand Junction Airport Isn't Grand
November 08, 2007
I am leaving Grand Junction, or trying to anyway. We were actually on a Delta flight ready to take off at 6:45 AM when we were informed that one of the computers wasn't working. I thought they would have checked that before they loaded our luggage and us! We had to get off and be rescheduled six hours later, after waiting for 90 minutes in line to get rebooked.
The security procedure here is the slowest I have encountered in any airport, large or small in the world -- really! I have my laptop in a separate carry case and a security official (the first armed official I have ever seen putting bags into the xray machine; I guess Osama knows where Grand Junction is) insisted that I take it out of the carry case. No one in the world has ever requested that I take it out. In fact, when I went through the first time this morning here in Grand Junction, no one asked me to take it out of its case. But he had a gun, what could I say? (I said nothing). I now fly home through Phoenix with middle seat assignments. Did anyone at Delta say, "Sorry for the inconvenience"? They did not.
Did I also mention that my hash browns at breakfast had a hair in them, and it wasn't mine? When it's not your day, you just go with the flow.
My friend Bill Kinnon wrote recently about an investigation into some media ministries by a U.S. Senator. Read what Bill had to say in "A Wake Up Call To Media Ministries?" It's pretty scary stuff.
I also ran across an interesting article in Fast Company magazine (my favorite) entitled Message in a Bottle. It has some fascinating insight into, facts about and implications of America's infatuation with bottled water. Here are just a few facts:
- Americans will spend $15 billion on bottled water in 2007.
- Americans will discard one billion plastic bottles from bottled water this year
- If our home water cost what bottled water cost, an American household's water bill would be $9,000 per month!

The weather in Colorado was absolutely fantastic while I was here. The people were great and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at First Assembly. The work, church and people here were grand; the airport, however, was not.
