Anyone who has come with me to Kenya has been captivated by little Mary at Upako Centre. When we go, the children always perform dances, songs and skits and Mary, while the smallest child of the older children, is always at the lead. Mary is an orphan but is supremely confident in her leadership capabilities and everyone, including the adults, responds to her presence and gifts (she is pictured here in front of the other children reciting a poem).
It is quite common in Kenya to send children away to boarding school to get the best education possible. It was and is obvious to us that Mary is gifted and has gone about as far as she can go in her current neighborhood school. We feel like we are supposed to invest in Mary to help her have the brightest future possible.
I told Pastor Francis of our plans and this is what he wrote me today:
I hope you are well,we have just concluded a very tight race to state house and we continue to pray that peace prevails in our land. After the short break for elections, schools re open on Monday and this is the reason that am writing to ask for updates on Mary's case if she can join the new school soon? Blessings
My question to you is: What should I tell Pastor Francis?
Should I tell him that we will underwrite the $700 Mary (pictured left) needs now to get started and the $400 three times a year for her tuition, room and board? Is this something we can make a commitment to provide?
I know this is not helping a host of children, but only one. It is quite a commitment for the next 5-6 years to say, "Yes, we will help our little Mary." If you are like me, you want to save the whole world or as many children as possible. I have come to realize, however, that I cannot save all the children from all the problems, so I will be content to save the few that God brings across my path.
I am going to tell Pastor Francis to enroll Mary and trust the Lord that He will move on your heart to help me do that. I know I won't have to go it alone. You can make your tax-deductible gift to PurposeQuest through my website or by sending a check to PO Box 8882, Pittsburgh, PA 15221-0882. Thank you for helping Mary and all the other Marys your gifts touch in the nation of Kenya.
